Today is Day 26 of my 90 Days To Christmas series. If you haven’t been able to tell, I love Christmas… like a fat kid loves cake. I love a stress free Christmas even more. Sometimes the idea of the entire family getting together can be scary. Then not getting done with your shopping on time can also cause quite a lot of stress. I am no longer a last minute shopper because of the stress it used to give me. Not to mention, family stress, in-law stress and everything in between!
Here are some awesome tips on how you can have a stress free Christmas and eat your cake too. Who doesn’t love cake?
Stress Free Christmas Tips
Plan Your Budget Accordingly
Yes, this is a big one. If you are trying to spend $3000 for Christmas on a $300 budget – sweet pea – there will be stress. Know what you have for each family member and child if you have them. Create your budget and expectations now so you are being realistic as you start shopping and buying the gifts.
And if you can’t afford gifts for everyone because you have a big family, don’t buy them. Create them. Who doesn’t love cookies or sweats or something handmade that is useful? I know I do!
Keep It Neutral – Avoid Sensitive Topics
My parents became Jehovah’s Witnesses when I was 8 years old, but before that we celebrated holidays with my moms family because they were closer to us and I remember them “reminiscing” about the past and that caused a bunch of fights because everyone pointed the finger and it brought up “those” memories.
Keep it super PC if Aunt Judy is going to be pissed that you’re bringing up something that should just be left alone. Avoid politics and all things that will cause some issues with the fam. Keep it as light and fun as possible!
Put The Gadgets Down
Holidays are about being together. It makes me sad that I even have to bring this up, but we are so “connected” to our devices that if we aren’t on them we feel like we miss out. Think about how much we are missing out on when we aren’t being PRESENT with our family.
A good idea and something I do with my family on the weekends (except for when we are taking pictures) is that I will put my phone and Chad’s phone away so we aren’t distracted with it. I turn them on silent and we can be 100% present with our family. This could be something you implement during the holidays. As soon as people walk in the door, hand over the phone, iPad or whatever gadget you are using that day.
Have Games Ready
Recently, at a team training for one of my clients. We played the game Guesstures. It was the most fun time I’ve had! I was literally snorting laughing by how much fun it was and the whole team enjoyed being with each other. I know family might be a little different but if you already have games and activities planned, instead of everyone sitting around waiting for food, you can keep people busy by playing and interacting with each other.
And if all else fails, buy wine.
These are just a few of the ideas I have to help you to have a stress free Christmas. What are some ways that help you to create a stress free Christmas atmosphere?
